Why "Auto Repair Shop" Is Probably the Wrong Primary Category for Your Google Profile
Of the 187 factors that decide where your shop shows up in Google's local results, one moves the needle more than any other. It isn't your website. It isn't backlinks. It's the primary category on your Google Business Profile.
Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors survey (November 2025) puts primary category at #1. Additional categories sit at #8. Between them, two fields on one form outweigh almost everything an agency will try to sell you.
The mistake almost every shop makes
Most shops pick the broadest option available, "Auto repair shop", and never touch it again. It's not wrong. It's just not the category that wins the searches you actually want.
We pulled an independent repair shop's profile for a teardown recently. 4.8 stars across more than a hundred reviews. Customers write about brake work often enough that Google surfaces it as a review theme on its own. Primary category: "Auto repair shop." Google has a separate "Brake shop" category. They're not in it. So for every "brake repair near me" search in their radius, they're competing as a generalist against shops that told Google exactly what they do.
Another one: a shop whose business name literally lists both collision work and mechanical repair. It's on the sign. Their profile has one category, "Auto body shop." No mechanical category anywhere, not even as a secondary. For every "mechanic near me" search in their area, Google has no idea they do that work, even though they wrote it into their own name.
Why you can't just guess and fix it later
Here's the part that makes this a job rather than a five-minute tweak. Narrower is not automatically better. Pick the wrong primary and you drop out of a pool you were already placing in. And Google treats a category change as a reset. You don't get to try three options and keep the best one.
Secondary categories give you nine slots. Which nine, in what order, against what the shops already ranking above you in your radius have claimed, is the actual work. It takes a look at your specific market, not a guess.
What to do this week
- Open your Google Business Profile and write down your current primary and secondary categories.
- Search your top three job types ("collision repair near me", "brake shop near me", "auto body shop near me") from your own city and note which shops appear in the map pack.
- Look at what categories those shops are using. Google shows the primary category on the profile.
- If your primary is more generic than theirs and your reviews prove you do the narrower work, you have a gap.
That last step is where most owners stop, because changing it blind is risky. This is exactly what we do for the shops we work with: pull your categories and your competitors', map them against what your radius is actually searching for, and set them once, properly. It's the first thing we fix in our auto body shop marketing program, because it carries more ranking weight than anything else on the profile.
