Top 3 from where? Your Google rank changes with the searcher's location

Top 3 From Where? How to Tell If Your Shop Really Ranks on Google

September 12, 2026

One question worth asking anyone who promises your shop rankings: top 3 from where?

Why one screenshot proves nothing

Proximity between the searcher and your address is the #2 local ranking factor of 187. Someone searching from three miles east sees a different top 3 than someone two miles west. Same shop, same second, different rank.

Which means a screenshot showing you at #1 is worth exactly nothing on its own. Taken from the right spot, say the pavement outside your own shop, almost anyone can produce one. If an agency sends you that screenshot as proof, ask where it was taken from.

How ranking is actually measured

The honest way is a grid. You pick a set of search points that covers your real service area, the neighborhoods your customers actually drive in from, and you run the search from each point. You get a map: green where you're in the top 3, yellow where you're 4 to 10, red where you don't show up.

That map tells you three things a screenshot can't: where you're winning, where you're invisible, and which competitor is taking each pocket you're losing.

How to do a rough version yourself

  • Open Google Maps on your phone and search "auto body shop" (or your main job type).
  • Drag the map to a neighborhood a few miles from your shop, then tap "Search this area."
  • Note who's in the top 3. Repeat in four or five directions.
  • If you're only in the top 3 within a mile of your own building, that's your answer.

It's crude, but it will show you the shape of the problem in ten minutes.

Why this is how our guarantee is written

A ranking promise that isn't scoped can't be held to anything. Ours is: top 3 in the map pack across your service area within 90 days, or you don't pay. "Across your service area" means a fixed grid of search points, agreed in writing before we start. You see your position at every point on the map, including the points where you're not in the top 3 yet.

Ask anyone pitching you what their number is measured from. Then ask us. We'll run the grid on your shop on the first call and show you the whole map. That's part of how we work with collision and body shops from day one.

Want to know where your shop actually stands? Book a 15-minute call and we'll pull your Google ranking live across your service area and run your numbers with you. No pitch if it's not a fit. Book a call.
