Google Ranks Your Shop Differently When You're Closed
There's a ranking factor most shop owners have never heard of, and it's quietly handing your evening customers to the shop down the street.
Whether your business is open at the time of the search now sits at #5 out of 187 local ranking factors in Whitespark's November 2025 survey. That's ahead of your star rating. Ahead of your review count. It's new to the survey this year, but not new to Google. Joy Hawkins documented the effect back in December 2023. It just took the industry a while to accept it.
What it means in practice
You can sit at #1 in the map pack all afternoon and get displaced after close by a shop that's still open. Every evening search goes to somebody else. Somebody gets rear-ended at 7pm, pulls over, searches "auto body shop near me", and Google shows them the three shops it believes are open right now. If your hours say you closed at 5, you're not in that list.
Two things have to be true for you to win that search, and they fail in different places.
1. Your hours have to be right in Google's eyes, every day of the year
Not just Monday through Friday. Holidays. The short Friday. The week you closed for the paint booth install. Every one of those is a chance for Google to think you're closed when you're open, or open when you're closed. That's the ranking half.
2. Something has to answer when the evening search turns into a call
Ranking at 7pm is worth nothing if the phone rings out. That's the money half. A driver who finds you at 7pm and gets voicemail is calling the next shop on the list before you see the missed call in the morning.
The shop that never told Google when it's open
We tore down a collision shop's profile recently. 4.8 stars. Customers rate the work highly. Their profile has no hours. Not wrong hours. None. Google is showing an "Add hours" prompt where the schedule should be.
A shop with no hours set can never satisfy the #5 ranking factor. Not once, not at any hour of any day. It gets worse: the profile was also unclaimed. Nobody had ever verified ownership. Which means no hours, no services, no photos, no responses to reviews, and no ability to fix any of it until someone claims it. A 4.8-star shop, represented to every person searching nearby by a page Google assembled without them.
What to check today
- Search your shop name on Google and look at the hours it shows. Are they right?
- Check "Special hours" in your Business Profile. Are upcoming holidays set?
- Search "auto body shop near me" from your phone after you close. Are you in the top 3?
- Call your own shop after hours. What happens?
Setting hours takes a day. Holding them right through every holiday, and noticing the day Google changes something without telling anyone, is the year. That's the part that doesn't happen on its own, and it's half of what we do. The other half is the phone: a Voice AI receptionist that answers the 7pm call and books the estimate before the driver dials anyone else.
