What a Missed Call Actually Costs an Auto Repair Shop

September 12, 2026

Every shop owner knows the phone rings at the worst time. The estimator's under a car. The front office is on hold with an adjuster. It's lunch. Here's what those ten minutes actually cost, with numbers you can check.

How many calls are you missing?

Marchex measured call handling across large multi-location auto service operators in 2026. Missed or failed call rates ran as high as 21% depending on the operator. The number worth sitting with isn't the ceiling. It's the floor: even the best-performing locations still missed close to one in ten. These are businesses with dedicated front-desk staff.

Run it on a shop taking 40 calls a week. That's about 173 calls a month. Miss one in ten and 17 people didn't reach you.

What happens to the ones you miss

CallRail surveyed 1,000 US consumers in September 2025. When a call goes unanswered, 21% call a competitor immediately. They don't try again. 78% have abandoned a business over an unanswered call. 82% say they'd go to a competitor. 41% hang up after one to two minutes on hold.

And voicemail doesn't save you. Only 42% of callers leave a message. About 58% leave nothing.

A quick note on a number you may have seen: "80% of callers who reach voicemail don't leave a message." It gets quoted constantly, including by companies selling what we sell. We went looking for it. It doesn't appear in any Marchex report we could find. The surveyed figure is 58%. That's still a serious leak, and we don't need to inflate it.

The auto-specific part

Invoca surveyed 340 automotive consumers in May 2026. 81% say they'll switch to a competitor that responds faster. 41% still prefer the phone over any other channel, up from 38% the year before. 27% called specifically because the information they wanted wasn't on the website.

The phone is not a legacy channel in this industry. It's the primary one, and it's the one most shops are worst at.

The math for your shop

Take your own numbers: calls per week, the share you miss (be honest, and check your phone log for the after-hours ones), and your average repair order. For a body shop at a $4,500 average RO, missing three inquiries a day that never come back is roughly 270 cars over 90 days. That's the number behind our guarantee, and it's conservative for the shops we're built for.

A missed call isn't a delayed job. Most of the time it's a job that went somewhere else.

What fixes it

Not a voicemail greeting. Not a contact form someone reads at the end of the day. Something has to pick up, in a real conversation, and put the car on the schedule before the caller hangs up. That's what a Voice AI receptionist built for auto shops does: answers 24/7, asks what happened and whether the car's drivable, checks for insurance, and books the estimate. Your estimator stays with the customer in front of him.

Want to know where your shop actually stands? Book a 15-minute call and we'll pull your Google ranking live across your service area and run your numbers with you. No pitch if it's not a fit. Book a call.
